Thankfully most device providers today have aimed at avoiding intrusive technology. And in a modern age where you have multiple devices in front of or around you at all times, it can also become a hinderance if not well managed. To simply not allow interruptions into your daily routine or schedule can be really difficult at times. Control Your Surroundingsįor me personally this one is the most difficult. For more options I suggest you check out this post by LifeHack - " 7 tools to help you keep track of your habits and goals". It can be as simple as keeping a diary or downloading the EverNote app. So set daily, weekly, monthly & yearly goals and track them. It takes a conscious awareness and desire to be effective at your work regardless to what job you have. The dream picture of a person sipping mojitos on the beach while their surfboard rental company runs itself and pays the bills is a fictional one. If you want to enjoy your work so much that you don't even feel the time go by it will take focus. And in my opinion thats a pretty short time investment to becoming a habitual goal hitter. In fact it takes doing the act repetitively for 21 days in a row to turn it into a real habit. Its quite well known that regardless to the goal it takes time to become consistent. Its not just about setting goals as much as it is about keeping a routine and managing your goals in an effective manor. So now imagine the pleasure you could gain from your day to day tasks and professional life if you could harness this ability yourself! And more importantly for your boss, imagine the level of output and productivity you can reach if you hit your flowstate daily! Set Goals And its why so many artists try hard to feed and influence there potential of hitting these flowstate moments to create new music or art. So again its no wonder hitting your flowstate can be likened to an unfiltered high or euphoria. So the level of creativity and focus is unhindered by a natural process our brains normally goes through to filter and edit how we think, feel and act. The interesting part about this is that the"close self-monitoring and editing parts of the brain were deactivated" when freestyling. "Spontaneous (left) versus conventional (right) conditions warm color's indicate increased activity (Scientific Reports)". The image below is from the study of the brain activity rappers had while on the left side, freestyling (improvising) and on the right side, rapping from memorised lyrics. I will only mention some of the key points from the article. A study was made on brain activity of freestyle rappers and was published by The Atlantic as " The Neuroanatomy of Freestyle Rap". One example of people hitting a flowstate almost literally is that of freestyle rappers. Scientifically, reaching a flowstate is getting to a point where you can trick your brain to stop its self editing process which makes you think and act slower. So hopefully the below can shed some light on just a couple ways to increase your chances of hitting your own flowstate regularly. So how do you target and reach your own flowstate consistently? Or is it something that just happens by chance or rare occasion? As a personal advocate of each individual using their own abilities to be the master of their own success I like to believe it is not something which is only acquired by chance. But you were so deep in the zone that you didn't even feel bothered by the hunger and those hours felt like minutes. Its those moments when you are so absorbed in your work that you look at the clock and realise you missed lunch and dinner and its already 8pm. Once we realise what that feeling of full immersion into our work or passion is it can indeed be referenced to as a positive addiction. Some may do it while blogging, others while selling a client, completing a workout routine or even just reading a book. But no doubt we all have at some point hit our own personal flowstate and felt complete satisfaction at the level of productivity and immersion we reach. The typical scene of a coder with their headphones on unreachable by the surrounding people or environment may be one of the more common examples of a person in flowstate.
